Ringtonator Released, Free Ringtones for All!
NOTICE: Version 1.1 has been released, and should fix the conversion inconsistency that has been going around. Link here.
After reading Erica’s post over at TUAW about how cleverboy found a workaround to the ringtone problem using AtomicParsely to edit the song’s metatags, I knew I had to write a GUI for it. An hour or two of work (learned how to implement draggable items), and I came up with this, which I call “The Ringtonator.”
It can handle multiple files, can convert from music to ringtones and back again. Unfortunately I couldn’t figure out a way to drag the music files from iTunes.
From now on, visit the app page for updates. Email me at ADMIN-at-@iPhonEXE-DOT(.)-com. This post is done.
That’s it for a bit. Comment if you like it, source will be posted later…

Nice work! I’d like to see the source code, either via email or download here.

Joe,
Check out the iMediaBrowser.framework for getting access to all your iTunes songs. It is an open source framework, currently being used by numerous companies, Karilea’s SandVox for one, and provides very easy integration with applications. It will allow you to drag a file, give you the URL on the drop, and you can load it up that way. Email me if you need svn access. The code is being moved to Google Code, but has not been made publicly open yet.
Great work.

Yet another useless tool for Windows users.

I copied the file from iTunes to my desktop and then dragged it to the window, but nothing happened. How do I make this work?

Hello Joe, I have tried it and it has not worked. I have changed the Suffix from (.mp3) to (.m4r). And I have dragged the mp3 to the Ringtonator; it has changed color from RED to Turqoise to no avail. Before, you get into the basics, Yes! I have enabled the Ringtome maker into iTunes. I have tried to import the file directly from iTunes to the Ringtonator. And I have placed the file directly onto the Mac Desktop, the Ringtonator changed color and it does not convert the file nor did it create a Ringtone file. It’s not as easy as you claimed it is. FYI Your promt reply is greatly appreciated in advance. Tanker10a

Tanker: to convert to m4a, you must get the mp3 in iTunes, right-click and select “Convert to AAC.” Drag the newly converted file on to the desktop, then into my app. This will produce an output file called “< songname > Ringtone.m4a”, which you can double-click to add in iTunes. Have fun.
Yes, I know it is inconsistent. It will work for one file and then not at all for another. I am looking for any differences in the atoms or anything. I know that if the m4a file includes image data, it will not work as a ringtone, so I updated the app to remove all image data. I’m still looking at this, give me a bit of time.

Okay, everything is fixed. Anyone else using AtomicParsely to make ringtones should see the iphonexe.com page for more details on the problem.

Thanks thus far for your contributions. It works like a charm with iTunes 7.4.1. As you may already know, it breaks under 7.4.2; so don’t update your only system you may have. I was able to get back to 7.4.1 by coping it from another of my not updated systems.
Any help you can provide to make this compatible with 7.4.2 would be great.
Thanks Joe, DM
